Youth Baseball Age Cutoffs: USSSA, Perfect Game & Little League (2027)
For the 2027 select and travel season, youth baseball age cutoffs for USSSA and Perfect Game are set by a May 1 date: a player who has turned the next age before May 1 of the season year (or, put the other way, who was not born on or after May 1 of the matching birth year) plays in the older “U” division. Little League Baseball uses a different clock — league age is how old the child is on August 31 of the season year. That gap is why the same birthday can be two different ages depending on the circuit, and why North Texas parents sometimes register for the wrong tryout age.
This chart is for the 2027 windows parents are using now for fall and spring registration. Pair it with our 2027 North Texas select baseball tryouts tracker before you pick a date. Always confirm on the event or team page; rules and season labels can change.
May 1 travel ball vs August 31 Little League
USSSA Baseball’s National By-Laws (Rule 3.01) define each age division by who turns the next age prior to May 1 of the current season, with a limited grade exception and a hard stop if the player turns two years older before August 1. Perfect Game’s youth age restrictions use the same May 1 birthday language — for example, 2027 10U events list players born on or after May 1, 2016. Little League sets baseball league age as the child’s actual age on August 31 of the current year; the 2027 Baseball Age Chart is the official lookup.
Select tryouts in North Texas are almost always advertised in USSSA / Perfect Game “U” ages. Rec and Little League drafts still follow August 31. If your kid just aged out of a Little League division, do not assume that maps 1:1 onto the select flyer.

2027 USSSA & Perfect Game chart (8U–14U)
Read this as age-based eligibility for the 2027 season year. Fall 2026 tournaments already use these windows. A player born on the May 1 start date is eligible for that younger division.
| Division | Born on or after | Born on or before |
|---|---|---|
| 8U | May 1, 2018 | April 30, 2019 |
| 9U | May 1, 2017 | April 30, 2018 |
| 10U | May 1, 2016 | April 30, 2017 |
| 11U | May 1, 2015 | April 30, 2016 |
| 12U | May 1, 2014 | April 30, 2015 |
| 13U | May 1, 2013 | April 30, 2014 |
| 14U | May 1, 2012 | April 30, 2013 |
How to use it: find the division on the tryout flyer, then check whether your child’s birthday falls in that row. If the flyer says “10U” and your child was born April 20, 2016, they turn 11 before May 1, 2027 — so they are past age-based 10U and belong in 11U unless a grade exception applies.
Grade exceptions (limited): Both circuits allow a small number of school-grade exceptions when a player is a year “old” by birthday but still in the matching grade. USSSA pairs the grade with an August 1 hard stop (the player cannot turn two years older before August 1). Perfect Game typically allows only two grade exemptions per team and requires those players to be born on or after January 1 of the division’s birth year. Do not count on a grade exception until the coach and the event rules both say yes.
14U and up: birthday or graduation year
Starting at 14U, Perfect Game often posts a dual standard: eligible by birthday or by high-school graduation year. The youth age page lists 14U as players born on or after May 1, 2012, or 2031 graduates or younger — and several 2027 14U event pages use that same “grad year or younger OR born on or after May 1, 2012” language. USSSA stays on the May 1 / grade framework through the scholastic divisions. When a flyer shows both a “U” age and a class year, read both lines before you register.
Little League 2027 league-age windows
Little League Baseball league age for 2027 is age on August 31, 2027. These windows match the official 2027 Baseball Age Chart (baseball only; softball uses a different date).
| League age | Born |
|---|---|
| 8 | Sept 1, 2018 – Aug 31, 2019 |
| 9 | Sept 1, 2017 – Aug 31, 2018 |
| 10 | Sept 1, 2016 – Aug 31, 2017 |
| 11 | Sept 1, 2015 – Aug 31, 2016 |
| 12 | Sept 1, 2014 – Aug 31, 2015 |
| 13 | Sept 1, 2013 – Aug 31, 2014 |
| 14 | Sept 1, 2012 – Aug 31, 2013 |
Local Little League boards can narrow which ages sit in Tee Ball, Minors or Majors inside those ranges. Call your league before you assume a division.

One birthday, two ages — worked example
Take a North Texas kid born June 20, 2015:
- 2027 travel / select (USSSA or Perfect Game): birthday falls in the 11U row (May 1, 2015 – April 30, 2016). On April 30, 2027 the player is still 11, so age-based 11U.
- 2027 Little League: the player turns 12 on June 20, 2027, so on August 31, 2027 they are league age 12.
Same child: 11U on the select tryout board, league age 12 at the local Little League. That is the May 1 vs August 31 trap. A March birthday in the same birth year often lines up in both systems; a late-spring or summer birthday is where families get crossed up.

When the season year flips
USSSA Baseball’s season begins the second Tuesday in August (National By-Laws Rule 2.01). Perfect Game’s posted 2027 youth windows already appear on fall 2026 and spring/summer 2027 event pages. Practical takeaway for North Texas parents: once you are looking at August–November tryouts labeled “2027,” use the 2027 May 1 chart above — not last spring’s ages. If a club still posts “2026 ages” in October, ask which season year they mean before you pay a deposit.
Before you register — short checklist
- Find the flyer’s circuit. USSSA, Perfect Game, or “open / local rules”? That tells you May 1 vs something else.
- Match birthday to the chart, then re-read the event’s own eligibility line. Event pages win over blog charts.
- Ask about grade exceptions before you assume your “old” 10U can stay down. Caps are real (PG: two per team).
- At 14U+, check grad year if the flyer lists one.
- Use the live tracker. Our 2027 tryouts tracker lists ages the way each org advertises them — confirm the “U” matches your chart row.
- Bring a birth certificate copy to tryouts and first tournaments. Both USSSA and PG expect age documentation if protested.
How this ties to tryouts in North Texas
Age is step one. How the evaluation works is step two. Read how select baseball tryouts work, then how to read a youth baseball tryout score sheet so a row of numbers makes sense. If you are jumping ages (especially into 13U), how youth baseball changes from 10U to 13U covers field size, pitching and the social jump — not just the birthday.
Other useful siblings when the age is settled: AA vs AAA vs Major, how to evaluate a select team, the jump to 13U, and what to do if you didn’t make the team.
